Basically it is not necessary, but we strongly recommend it.
Because the paint quality of many modern bicycles is becoming better, it is more difficult to get a ground (mass) contact at the fork. Also corrosion between the fork and the hub will have no influence if you use a double wired cable.
So if you would like to have a failproof lighting system, you better use a double wired cable.
