| Which gear combinations can I use best on my derailleur bike? |
 |
If you use a bike with Shimano components and you follow Shimano's instructions, you can basically use all gear combinations.
Example: 3 chain rings at the front with an 8-speed cassette at the rear. If you have followed the instructions correctly, you should have no hesitation in using all 24 gears! After all, this is what Shimano designed the drive train for. However, it is better not to use extreme gear combinations continuously, because this will:
- lead to excessive wear of the chain sprockets and chain rings - cause noise while riding - reduce the overall efficiency of the drive train.
Therefore, for best performance and durability, Shimano recommends not to use the gear combinations shown in the drawing above.
IMPORTANT NOTE: * Check that the rear derailleur capacity is suitable for the chosen components. * Calculate the correct chain length. * Always follow the guidelines in Shimano's Service Instruction.
