The total capacity of a rear derailleur is the length of chain slack the derailleur will be able to take up. If the chain is on the largest chainring and the largest sprocket, it will be very taut. Conversely if the chain is on the smallest chainring and the smallest sprocket, it will be very slack. The rear derailleur must be capable of taking up this slack.
